THE CENTRO EXPLORATIVO

La Pista, Guatemala

In 2002, Social EntrepreneurU founder Greg Van Kirk, at the time a Peace Corps Volunteer, recognized a need in the community of Nebaj for educational resources free for all. He started the Centro Explorativo as a community library. His vision was to provide a place where children could go to have open access to books.

Immediately, local Guatemalans took the lead at the Centro, took ownership through a local assocIation, and began to expand its scope of services to the community. In 2008, the Centro was relocated to La Pista, a rural village about 45 minutes from Nebaj by foot, to be more accessible to those most in need. The current Centro Explorativo building has a library, a computer center, classrooms, a multi-use space, a small kitchen, and a small playground for the children. Until COVID 19, It had been providing services to approximately 250 children and youth (ages 4-16) through weekday classes, after school programs and weekend activities. Hundreds of Social Entrepreneur Corps participants have engaged with and learned from the incredible teachers and children at the Centro.

The leadership at the Centro is now reinventing itself given the circumstances and is developing distance learning, youth entrepreneurship and resiliency programs with the support of Social EntrepreneurU.It needs critical support to maintain jobs for leadership and to implement programs. You can contribute to the Centro through it's Global Giving outreach HERE. Thank you.
